Pub Night At Nethy Brigde

Saturday 27th of September, we decided to finally give the pub another chance, we'd not been in a a long time because the last time that we'd visited the only other patrons were two middle aged men who were clearly by themselves. Seeing this, we decided to leave and from then on never really visited again.

But on this instance we actually gave it another chance. Torstin and I found the place already more lively than the first time that we came there, a large group of people were celebrating a common friend's 50th birthday.

Feeling mildly awkward about intruding we decided to stay anyway. After about half an hour of people glancing at us sideways, we managed to strike up a conversation with someone who had clearly been at it longer than we had. We understood that the large group were in fact part family and locals, while the other part consisted of friends from all over the country who'd apperantly decided to travel all the way to join in on the celebration.

It wasn't long until we were pulled into the festivities where we were immediately surrounded by more than slightly intoxicated people asking us where exactly we were from. This quickly led to a discussion because the majority of them flat-out refused to believe that I wasn't from the UK. They all felt that my accent was too genuine to be acquired any other way.

At the apex of the festivities a young lady made her way to the centre of the room carrying a bagpipe. Of course this peaked our interest and we inconspicuously made our way to a place where we could see this spectacle at a better perspective.

Somehow she was able to mix a number of familiar party songs, including ''Happy Birthday to you'', with a few unfamiliar tunes, creating a very pleasant tune to listen to.

Seeing how we'd now become familiar with the people there, they started offering us small things at first: a drink here and a small snack there. But once they finaly noticed that we weren't fed at the Lazy Duck, they became much more generous, what they did was sit us down and hand us a massive plate of food that ''no one would eat otherwise''.
Astonished by this sudden generosity, I realised that I was indeed famished and started eating with a new vigour.

Joël

I'm spending two months in Scotland as an internship to improve my fluency and cultural knowledge amonst other things. I've found a place to work and stay at a small hostel/b&b/campsite called The Lazy Duck, in the small village of Nethy Bridge in Scotland.
